John W. Sexton @ Steeples

Poet John W. Sexton is this year’s Festival Writer in Residence.
He has worked with local groups gathering stories and turning them into performance pieces to be premiered on Saturday 5 October at Lough Derg Yacht Club.
For Culture Night, on 20th September in the Steeples Cafe,  John will present his own new work,  An Ormond Aisling, inspired by his research of local pagan folklore and mythology.

This is a free event – no booking necessary

Maggie Wadey, author of The English Daughter, a novel based on her mother’s stories of life growing up in nearby Puckane, Nenagh. Maggie’s book is at once a real-life memoir, a detective story and a family saga. She will read from and discuss her work with local historian, Danny Grace. Danny has has published books on the parish of Monsea & Killodiernan, the Famine in Nenagh Poor Law Union and more recently, the Centenary History of Kiladangan GAA Club.

Relax as you take a stroll through Nenagh in the company of Kevin Whelan, your guide to the Town’s history, from its Norman origins to the present day. Visit the splendid Castle, Gaol and Abbey and get an insight into famous events and the people who shaped the Town. The walk is very gentle and will cover a distance of approximately 1km (0.6 miles).

Enjoy Sunday brunch at Steeples Cafe while Jane Clarke and Geraldine Mitchell read poems by their colleague and friend, Shirley McClure, who died in 2016. After Shirley’s death, Jane edited a collection of her poems, Origami Doll, that was published earlier this year. Jane and Geraldine will read for you and discuss why Shirley McClure was an important figure in their lives and in the Irish poetry landscape.

Novelist Niamh Boyce will read from and discuss her award winning novel, Her Kind. Based on the life of Alice Kytler, a powerful, wealthy money-lender in 14th Century Kilkenny. Niamh’s book is a vivid re-imagining of the events leading to Ireland’s first witch trials. Niamh will be in conversation with writer and academic Sarah Moore Fitzgerald. Music from singer, Dylan Rooney and cellist, Gráinne Higgins will enhance the atmosphere within the walls of Nenagh Castle.
